Protein Plantain Brownies

I love baking with plantains.  They are the perfect ingredient for creating a grain-free, egg-free, and nut-free recipe because they form a cohesive dough that binds together and bakes into a dense, moist treat!  If you use plantains before they ripen, they have a very mild taste; making it easy to highlight whatever flavor you are looking for.

My recipe for plantain brownies is made using just 4 ingredients: plantains, pitted dates, cocoa powder and protein powder.  This recipe is low in sugar, but if you have a preference for sweeter desserts you can always add more dates, or any sweetener of your choice.


Protein Plantain Brownies


  • 300 g peeled plantain (about 1 extra large plantain or 2 medium)
  • 5 pitted dates (about 35 g)*
  • 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla or chocolate protein powder


  1. Peel and slice plantains then blend in food processor until smooth.  (Scrape the sides of your food processor every so often)
  2. Add dates and blend.
  3. Add dry ingredients and blend until dough is consistent.
  4. Put batter in small, lined or greased pan.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes.
  6. Top with any desired frosting.  (These are frosted with a mixture of cream cheese and cinnamon.)

*Add more dates for a sweeter taste


These plantain brownies are the perfect treat if you are craving dessert but still want something healthy.  You can eat the whole batch (like I did with my family) without the sugar crash you would get from a conventional brownie recipe 😉
